Protest planned at former RAF base following Thetford unrest
A protest is planned at the former RAF Barnham Camp in Suffolk following recent civil unrest in the nearby town of Thetford, Norfolk. The Home Office has been assessing the site for potential use to house male asylum seekers aged 18 to 65, though no asylum seekers are currently residing there.
Recent tensions in Thetford involved attempts to storm homes linked to asylum seekers and three nights of unrest where police officers were subjected to "significant aggression." Norfolk police reported that officers were hit with rocks, bitten, and spat at during the disorder. While Friday night in Thetford was described as "largely peaceful," three arrests were made and property damage occurred.
Suffolk Constabulary noted that the site is currently used as a training facility for Norfolk and Suffolk forces, and vehicles seen on site are typically used for training purposes. Police stated they intend to support the lawful right to protest while ensuring public safety and protecting local communities.
