Tirana protests enter 95th day as demonstrators demand Edi Rama's resignation
Anti-government protests in Tirana, Albania, have entered their 95th consecutive day, marked by escalating tensions and clashes between demonstrators and police. The movement, which initially began as a reaction to the environmental impact of the Zvernec tourist project, has expanded into a broader demand for political and institutional change.
Key demands from the protesters include the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, the formation of a transitional government, changes to the electoral law, and the release of individuals detained during previous demonstrations. During recent clashes, protesters attempted to enter government buildings, leading police to use tear gas to disperse the crowds.
In one significant incident, Prime Minister Rama was evacuated from his office under heavy security as thousands of protesters blocked the entrances and exits of the Prime Minister's Office for approximately two hours. Following these tensions, police arrested 14 protesters, citing active resistance and physical confrontations with law enforcement. Protesters have signaled their intent to continue civil disobedience, with plans to move demonstrations to various other state institutions in the coming days.
