Delhi protesters march against electoral roll revision

Protesters in New Delhi marched toward the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters on Friday to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The demonstration, organized by the Delhi Coordination Committee of People Against SIR, included students, farmers, and members of various civil society groups such as the CPI(M), AIDWA, and AIDSO.

Participants alleged that the SIR process has led to the illegal deletion of numerous voters from electoral rolls. While the Election Commission has rejected these allegations, stating that its actions comply with existing laws, opposition groups continue to call for a rollback. The march was met with heavy security, including Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force personnel, who utilized barricades and invoked Section 163 of the BNSS to prohibit mass gatherings.

Reports on the number of detainees vary, with some sources citing approximately 20 individuals and others reporting over 100 people taken into custody. The Delhi mobilization is part of a broader series of planned demonstrations across 88 cities in 18 states.
