Bangkok protesters contest IMF and World Bank austerity policies

Protesters and activists have gathered in Bangkok to demonstrate against the fiscal policies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank during their annual meetings. The People’s Network Against the World Bank and IMF has established protest sites near the Rama 4 intersection, facing police cordons and security measures.

Demonstrators are protesting against calls for budget austerity and debt discipline imposed on developing nations. Activists and NGOs, including Oxfam, argue that these measures exacerbate inequality and threaten essential public services such as health, education, and social protection. They are calling for debt cancellation, increased climate change adaptation funding, and structural reforms to the international financial institutions.

Specific grievances include the long-term impacts of World Bank-funded projects, such as the Pak Mun Dam in Thailand, which local residents claim has caused significant livelihood damage. Protesters are demanding that these institutions rethink their roles and provide compensation for communities affected by past development projects.
