Protests announced at Jantar Mantar over Election Commission controversy
Student organizations, youth groups, and various political entities have announced a major protest titled ‘Delhi Chalo,’ scheduled for October 10 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The demonstrators are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a halt to the Special Deepening Review (SIR) of voter lists, and broader reforms to the electoral system.
Leading the call are Neha Bora, National President of the All India Students' Association (AISA), and Suru Das, Co-convener of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). The movement is framed as a collective struggle involving civil society and opposition groups, including representatives from the Students' Federation of India (SFI), All India Students' Federation (AISF), and the Aam Aadmi Party's student wing (ASAP).
Organizers have informed the Delhi Police of the protest to ensure cooperation regarding traffic and law and order, though they noted they are not seeking ‘permission’ for the demonstration. Protesters have indicated that the movement may continue beyond a single day until their demands are addressed.
