Protests at Indonesian Parliament building turn violent
Chaos erupted during a demonstration in front of the DPR/MPR building in Jakarta on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Following an oration by activist Supriyono, also known as Mas Botok, regarding a mediation agreement with parliamentary leadership, crowds became dissatisfied, leading to civil unrest.
During the commotion, a man suspected of being a provocator was seen brandishing a machete (golok). The individual was subsequently chased and beaten by a mob before being secured by police. Witnesses reported that the man, wearing a black jacket and a light blue helmet, had initially hidden the weapon in a bag before brandishing it again near the media area.
In the midst of the unrest, members of parliament Rieke Diah Pitaloka and Andre Rosiade were nearly attacked by unidentified individuals while meeting with protesters. Police have tightened security in the Palmerah Timur area, conducting searches and closing roads to prevent further escalation.
