Arunachal Pradesh: Violent protests erupt over Siang mega-dam project

Violent unrest has broken out in Arunachal Pradesh following opposition to the proposed 11,200 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP). Protests in Pasighat and Geku escalated into clashes with security forces, resulting in arson, the burning of a National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) office, damage to a police station, and the destruction of several police vehicles. At least 21 people have been arrested, and dozens of security personnel were injured.

The project, intended to serve as a strategic counter to China’s upstream Medog hydropower project, faces intense opposition from indigenous Adi communities. Groups such as the Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum (SIFF) and Adi Bane Kebang argue the dam will submerge approximately 27 villages, displace up to 150,000 people, and destroy ancestral lands and cultural heritage. Protesters have demanded the release of detainees and the withdrawal of paramilitary forces, including the CRPF and RAF.

In response to the instability, the Indian government has deployed hundreds of additional central security personnel to the region. Meanwhile, intelligence agencies are reportedly investigating potential foreign funding linked to the anti-dam activists. The Arunachal Christian Forum has offered to mediate peace talks between the government and local stakeholders to prevent further escalation.
