Protests erupt in Nepal over Ani Choying Dolma’s appointment

Protests have broken out in Nepal following the government's decision to appoint Buddhist nun Ani Choying Dolma as vice chairperson of the Lumbini Development Trust. The Lumbini Development Trust is responsible for managing the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha.

Various groups, including the National Gen Z Citizens’ Campaign and the Lumbini Bachau Mahaabhiyan, have organized demonstrations in Kathmandu and Lumbini. Opponents are demanding an investigation into allegations regarding Dolma’s citizenship and financial dealings, including claims of money laundering and funds received from Hong Kong. While these allegations remain unproven, campaigners argue that the appointment lacks transparency and should be revoked until an impartial investigation is completed.

During the unrest, police arrested two individuals, including Akram Khan, a coordinator for the Lumbini Bachau Mahaabhiyan, during a nighttime raid in Parsachok. The Rupandehi District Police Office stated the arrests were made in connection to alleged “disorderly activities” in a public place. Protesters also burned an effigy of Culture and Tourism Minister Ganesh Paudel during Monday's demonstrations.
