Protests erupt in Senegal over inflation and in Germany against far-right rise

In Dakar, Senegal, over 200 protesters organized by an apolitical collective of citizens and influencers marched to denounce the rising cost of living. Demonstrators used empty household baskets to highlight the increasing prices of fuel, consumer goods, and rent. The protest serves as a critique of President Diomaye Faye’s administration, noting that despite promises of improved welfare made alongside Ousmane Sonko, citizens face significant economic disillusionment.

In Germany, approximately 6,000 people gathered in Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, to protest against the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Organized by the collective ‘Saxony-Anhalt. Open to the World’, the demonstration occurred on the eve of a regional election where the AfD is projected to achieve a historic victory. Protesters advocated for democracy and an open society, amid concerns regarding the party’s anti-migrant and pro-Russian stances.
