Protests escalate in France and Albania with curfews and clashes

Violent unrest and social protests have triggered significant security responses in France and Albania. In France, authorities have implemented targeted nighttime curfews in Paris, Bordeaux, Nice, Lyon, Marseille, and Lille following widespread looting and violence. In Paris, specific restrictions are in place around Place de la République and Les Halles, while unauthorized gatherings are prohibited near the Elysée Palace and the National Assembly. The French government has deployed massive police forces and activated the military under Operation Sentinelle, with over 2,500 arrests reported. Notable damage includes the destruction of the historic Limoges city hall.

In Albania, student-led demonstrations in Tirana have entered their eighth day, now joined by the academic community. Protesters are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, citing high costs of living, housing issues, and corruption. Clashes have occurred at Skanderbeg Square and near government offices, involving Molotov cocktails and stones, met by police use of tear gas and water cannons. Prime Minister Rama has characterized the unrest as “hybrid warfare” intended to destabilize the country’s European trajectory and has announced stricter penalties for underage rioters.
