Protests in Mexico and misinformation in Ecuador

In Michoacán, Mexico, members of the Afro-descendant community of El Ticuíz held a peaceful protest on the Mexico 200 federal highway in Coahuayana. The demonstrators blocked traffic in both directions to demand self-governance and an end to the interference of municipal and ejidal authorities in their community. The protest was part of a broader movement by the Supreme Council of Indigenous Peoples of Michoacán to address the demands of indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples. Traffic was released every 30 minutes during the demonstration, which concluded by late afternoon.

In Ecuador, claims circulating on TikTok regarding an indefinite national strike called by all indigenous groups have been identified as false. Fact-checking investigations of the country’s two largest social organizations, the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) and the Confederation of National Organizations of Peasants, Indigenous, Black, and Montubio People (FENOCIN), confirmed that neither group has issued any official communication or announcement regarding a national strike.
