Protests in Vienna and Graz expected to cause major traffic disruptions

Large-scale demonstrations scheduled for late October 2026 are expected to cause significant transportation disruptions across Austria, specifically in Vienna and Graz.

In Vienna, approximately 20,000 people are expected to protest against government austerity measures on Thursday, October 22. The demonstration is set to begin around 4:00 PM at Resselpark, moving through Karlsplatz, Lothringerstraße, and Schwarzenbergplatz. The route will proceed along the Ringstraße and Franz-Josefs-Kai, eventually ending at the University of Vienna. The ÖAMTC has warned of heavy traffic congestion in the city center and on major access roads.

In Graz, a demonstration on Friday, October 23, will impact public transit. Starting at 4:00 PM at the Hauptbahnhof (Europaplatz), the march will proceed via Annenstraße and Volksgartenstraße toward Lendplatz. Between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM, several tram lines (1, 4, 6, 7, and 17) and bus lines (52, 40, and 67) are expected to face delays or temporary halts.
