Protests occur during Switzerland vs. Israel football match in Sion
During the FIFA World Cup playoff match between Switzerland and Israel in Sion, political protests occurred within the stadium. Approximately three dozen spectators displayed Palestinian flags and banners, including one reading ‘Show Israel the Red Card,’ calling for UEFA to exclude Israel due to the situation in Gaza.
Security personnel intervened to remove the protesters and the unauthorized materials. While some demonstrations took place outside the stadium prior to the match, the incidents inside were described as brief and peaceful.
Ahead of the game, the Swiss Football Association (SFV) had allowed individual players the option to opt out of the match due to the political tension, though no players exercised this right. Security authorities, including the Valais Cantonal Police, maintained discretion regarding specific risk classifications and security arrangements for the event.
