Proton launches open-source Authenticator app as 1Password acquires Apono for JIT access governance

Proton has released "Proton Authenticator," an open‑source two‑factor authentication app that stores TOTP codes with end‑to‑end encryption and secure cross‑device sync. The app supports imports from Google, Microsoft, Authy and LastPass and is positioned to help businesses move away from vulnerable SMS‑OTP and password‑based logins toward passkey‑compatible, phishing‑resistant authentication.

At the same time, 1Password announced the acquisition of Apono, a provider of Just‑in‑Time (JIT) access governance. The purchase expands 1Password’s platform beyond password vaulting to include time‑limited, task‑specific permissions for users, machine accounts and AI agents across cloud services such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Snowflake and Databricks, with integrations to Slack, Jira, PagerDuty and GitHub. A private beta of a new Credential Broker for GitHub Actions Workload Identity is also being launched.
