Proton Mail and Meet desktop apps falsely flagged as malware by macOS
macOS recently incorrectly flagged the desktop clients for Proton Mail and Proton Meet as malware, preventing users from opening the applications. The issue was attributed to a technical error within the Apple Developer Program involving the system's security and certification model, specifically regarding app signatures and validation processes.
Proton addressed the disruption on October 2. Following an investigation that began around 10:54 AM Eastern Time, the company released new versions of the apps by 12:51 PM Eastern Time to bypass the blocks. The service was officially marked as resolved by the evening of October 2.
During the outage, users were advised to use Proton's web applications as a workaround. Proton emphasized that no user accounts or data were compromised, clarifying that the error was strictly a technical verification failure by Apple's security mechanisms.
