Proton Mail introduces automatic email categorization
Proton Mail has introduced a new automatic email categorization feature designed to organize user inboxes into six distinct groups: Primary, Social, Promotions, Newsletters, Transactions, and Updates.
To maintain its privacy-centric security model, Proton utilizes metadata for sorting rather than scanning the actual content of messages. This approach ensures that the service's zero-access encryption remains intact, meaning the company cannot read the contents of the emails. Users retain control by being able to customize which categories are visible, reassign individual emails, or opt out of the feature entirely to return to a traditional chronological inbox.
The rollout is being implemented in stages, with full availability expected by the end of September 2026. Additionally, Proton announced plans to introduce full-text search for mobile applications, which will perform indexing and searches locally on the user's device to preserve end-to-end encryption.
