Proton S70 selected for Sarawak taxi modernization program

The National MADANI Taxi Renewal Programme has expanded to Sarawak, introducing the Proton S70 as the designated taxi model to modernize the local public transport industry. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah stated that the initiative aims to improve driver welfare, passenger safety, and comfort while revitalizing the profession to attract younger individuals.

To support this transition, the government is offering incentives including sales and excise tax exemptions and various financing options. Proton is also providing specific support, such as discounts of up to RM9,700 and priority service at Proton Service Centres to minimize operational downtime. Financing options include hire-purchase packages with lower daily installments and leasing packages that incorporate vehicle maintenance.

In Sarawak, there are currently 446 active registered taxi drivers and 170 rental-car drivers under the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board. The program seeks to leverage digitalization and e-hailing platforms to make the sector more accessible and flexible for the younger generation.
