Province of Pisa uses surveillance to combat illegal waste dumping

The Province of Pisa has implemented a video surveillance system to combat the illegal abandonment of waste along provincial roads and in surrounding areas, including canals, ditches, and fields. Since the system was activated in January 2026, authorities have confirmed seven cases of uncontrolled waste dumping. The cameras are specifically positioned between the SP 4 ‘Di Orentano’ and the SP 3 ‘Bientina-Altopascio’ roads.

Provincial Police monitoring has already identified several responsible parties, leading to reports filed with the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Pisa. Fines totaling thousands of euros have been issued, with some payments already collected. Investigations continue for other cases, which are often complicated by the fact that offenses occur at night, during rain, or involve vehicles registered to companies based in other provinces.

President of the Province of Pisa, Massimiliano Angori, noted that when perpetrators remain unknown, the economic and administrative burden of removal and disposal falls entirely on the community and taxpayers. Under Italian environmental law (D. Lgs. 152/2006), private citizens face fines between 1,500 and 18,000 euros, while businesses can face arrest for six months to two years or fines ranging from 3,000 to 27,000 euros.
