On 2 August 2026, the Frente Cívico por Santiago, led by Senator Gerardo Zamora, secured a decisive victory in the municipal elections across Santiago del Estero Province. The coalition obtained roughly 66 % of the total votes and won the mayoral contests in all 26 municipalities, including the capital where Mario Benavente was elected with about 60.5 % of the vote, and La Banda where Llamil Abdala won with 51.6 %.

The opposition alliance La Libertad Avanza, aligned with President Javier Milei, received only about 8 % of the provincial vote and managed to win just three of the 194 council seats, a result described by local media as a “catastrophic” performance. Governor Elías Suárez, Vice‑governor Carlos Silva Neder and other provincial leaders praised the turnout—over 70 % in many districts—and reiterated a message from Zamora: “Santiago no se vende, la patria no se entrega.”

The election was marked by high voter participation, with roughly 600 000 eligible voters and more than 1 700 polling stations. The results are being watched as an indicator of the political climate ahead of upcoming national contests.
