Proximus expands fiber optic coverage in Belgium
Proximus has made fiber optic access available to 2.814 million homes and businesses in Belgium, covering more than 44 percent of the population. As of the end of September, the number of active fiber optic lines reached 858,000, representing a 25 percent increase over the previous year.
In the third quarter, the company added 61,000 new connections, compared to 75,000 in the same period last year. This growth follows the full integration of Unifiber on June 1, a strategic move intended to accelerate deployment in the Wallonia region. CEO Stijn Bijnens stated that through various cooperation agreements, the company aims to bring fiber coverage to 80 percent of Belgium in the coming years.
Despite the expansion, Proximus reported a 1.9 percent decline in business market revenue, totaling 464 million euros in the third quarter. The company attributed this to decreasing revenue from fixed telephony, classic data connections, and mobile subscriptions due to increased competition, as well as delays in some IT service projects.
