Proxmox VE launches official support for ARM64 architecture
Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH has announced that its flagship virtualization platform, Proxmox VE version 9.2, now includes official support for ARM64 architecture. This marks a significant expansion for the Debian-based distribution, which previously only supported 64-bit x86 systems.
Official support is currently focused on high-performance server systems, specifically NVIDIA Grace and Vera architectures. The release was developed in close collaboration with NVIDIA and Supermicro, with testing conducted on Grace Hopper Superchip servers. While the software offers best-effort support for other UEFI-based ARMv9-A and ARMv8-A hardware, it explicitly does not support single-board computers that rely solely on a Devicetree, such as the Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi, or Radxa ROCK.
Technical features such as KVM for virtual machines, LXC for containers, and the ZFS and Ceph storage solutions have been optimized for these ARM-based servers. However, certain architecture-specific limitations exist, including the absence of SeaBIOS and AMD's SEV memory encryption. Additionally, live migration of virtual machines between different architectures (x86 and ARM) is not supported.
