Prozac: The impact of fluoxetine on depression treatment

Forty years after its introduction in Europe and the United States, Prozac remains a significant fixture in mental health treatment. While often nicknamed the ‘happiness pill’ by media and marketing, medical experts clarify its actual function. Paolo Brambilla, director of the Neuroscience and Mental Health department at the Policlinico di Milano, states that the drug does not create happiness but rather provides clarity and allows patients to be less emotionally overwhelmed.

The active ingredient, fluoxetine, revolutionized pharmacology by offering a safer alternative to previous antidepressants with fewer severe side effects. It helped shift the societal perception of depression from a character flaw to a serious medical condition. However, experts note that the drug cannot resolve underlying social difficulties or trauma, and its mechanism of action involves more than just serotonin levels.

In Italy, approximately 2.6 million people currently use antidepressants, a figure that has seen significant growth. Medical consensus emphasizes that while medication is a vital tool, combining it with psychotherapy is crucial for long-term recovery. As the field evolves, new therapeutic frontiers such as psychedelics and electroconvulsive therapy are being explored to treat depression.
