Prue Leith calls for school lunchbox ban and free meals

Dame Prue Leith has called for a ban on school lunchboxes, describing the measure as “draconian” but necessary because the contents cannot be effectively policed. She argued that parents often find it difficult to resist including unhealthy items, such as chocolate, in their children's lunchboxes.

Leith also advocated for compulsory, free school meals for all children, noting that nutritious food provides both health benefits and an “opportunity for pleasure.” Her comments come amid an overhaul of school food standards in England intended to combat tooth decay and childhood obesity. Additionally, she noted that starting in September, all pupils in England from families receiving universal credit will be eligible for free school meals.

Furthermore, Leith highlighted that school kitchen staff are currently undervalued, suggesting they play a vital role in educating children and building their confidence to try new foods.
