Prutul de Jos Biosphere Reserve hosts rare species in Moldova
The Prutul de Jos Biosphere Reserve in the Republic of Moldova serves as a critical sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna. According to Viorica Paladi, the institution's deputy director, the reserve is home to 256 bird species, including 51 that are considered rare on both national and international levels. Notable sightings include the red duck, various types of herons, and the whinchat, which has been seen in the region only once in 20 years.
The reserve also supports 51 mammal species, 14 of which are rare, such as the otter, wildcat, and several bat species. Additionally, the area provides a habitat for various reptiles and amphibians, including the Crimean lizard and the yellow-bellied snake.
Founded in 2018, the Prutul de Jos Biosphere Reserve is the only internationally recognized reserve of its kind in Moldova. It plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting migratory birds that transit through the Lower Prut sector.
