Przewalski's horse foal born in Kazakhstan after 200 years

A Przewalski's horse foal has been born in central Kazakhstan, marking the first birth of the species in the region in over 200 years. The foal was born on August 22 in the Golden Steppe area of the Altyn Dala reserve.

The parents, a mare named Tessa from Tierpark Berlin and a stallion named Zorro from Prague Zoo, were transported to Kazakhstan in June 2024 as part of a reintroduction initiative. The foal is currently residing in an acclimatization enclosure at the Alibi reintroduction center, where it is reported to be healthy and nursing regularly.

The project, which involves Prague Zoo and the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK), aims to restore a viable population of this endangered species to its original habitat. This milestone is viewed by project leaders as a significant step toward the successful reintroduction of wild horses to the Kazakh steppe.
