Przewalski's horse foal born in Kazakhstan steppes

A Przewalski's horse foal has been born in the central Kazakh steppes, marking the first time a member of this species has been born in the wild in approximately 200 years. The birth is a significant milestone for a reintroduction program aimed at restoring the species to its ancestral habitats in Central Asia.

Przewalski's horses, scientifically known as Equus ferus przewalskii, are considered the last truly wild equids on Earth. The species faced near extinction in the 1960s due to hunting, competition with domestic livestock, and habitat loss, leading to their disappearance from the wild. After surviving only in captivity with extremely low genetic diversity, the species is now being gradually reintroduced to the region. This recent birth follows the arrival of the first horses intended for recolonization two years ago.
