Przewalski’s horses born in Kazakhstan after 200 years

Two Przewalski’s horse foals have been born in the grasslands of central Kazakhstan, marking the first time the species has been born in this region in over 200 years. The births occurred in late August at the Alibi Wild Ungulates Reintroduction Center, located within the Altyn Dala State Nature Reserve.

The first foal, a male, was born on August 22 to a seven-year-old mare named Tessa. A second male foal was born on August 31 to a mare named Umbra. Both foals share the same father, a stallion named Zorro, who has since passed away.

Conservationists view these births as a significant milestone for the species' reintroduction efforts. Alyona Krivosheyeva, conservation director of the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK), stated that the births prove the horses are successfully adapting to the local climate and territory.

Przewalski’s horses are the only truly wild horse species remaining in the world. After being declared extinct in the wild, the species has been the subject of intensive recovery programs involving zoos and reintroduction projects in Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
