PS-Madeira proposes Geographical Indication for regional wicker work
Célia Pessegueiro, president of PS-Madeira, has proposed that producer and artisan organizations apply for a Geographical Indication for Madeira's wicker work. The initiative aims to revitalize the sector, which has historically been emblematic to the region, particularly in the village of Camacha.
To support the industry, the Socialist Party is calling for Regional Government intervention, including direct support for producers and artisans via programs like POSEI. Pessegueiro suggested creating a dedicated industry line for wicker, similar to those existing for bananas and wine, to reduce reliance on imports.
Additional proposals to ensure the sector's survival include generational renewal through paid two-year vocational training programs, updating product designs to blend tradition with contemporary styles, and reactivating spaces dedicated to craft production to improve commercialization.
