PlayStation 5 modders enable original PS2 disc playback

The PlayStation 5 homebrew community has achieved significant technical milestones through console jailbreaking. A developer known as Sword has released PS5SX2, an unofficial emulator based on PCSX2 that allows jailbroken PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles to run original PlayStation 2 games. The software enables users to insert physical PS2 DVDs into the console's disc drive, which are then automatically copied to the internal SSD or an external USB drive for emulation. This process supports upscaling resolutions up to 4K and provides features like widescreen patches and improved frame rates.

Beyond PS2 support, the modding scene is expanding into other areas. Developers have demonstrated the ability to run PlayStation 3 titles via the KB-RPCS3 project and have even successfully run Windows games using the Proton compatibility layer. Additionally, a new application called Overdrive has emerged, which functions as an unofficial alternative to the PlayStation Store on modified hardware.

These developments come amid growing consumer concerns regarding Sony’s decision to phase out physical media by 2028. While these tools offer enhanced retro-gaming capabilities and software compatibility, they require specific firmware versions (7.00 to 13.60) and carry risks, including potential console bans from online services and the invalidation of warranties.
