Psatha helicopter collision investigation focuses on coordination gap

Investigations are intensifying into the August 2 helicopter collision in Psatha, which occurred during firefighting operations and resulted in two fatalities. The Directorate for Combating Organized Crime has taken over the inquiry, having already collected at least 15 testimonies from personnel, firefighters, and local residents.

Key evidence centers on a critical 15-minute window before the crash. A high-ranking Fire Service officer, who was managing ground coordination, reportedly left the site to address a flare-up in another area. Following protocol, coordination shifted to an aerial coordinator, who was stationed in Vilia and lacked direct visual contact with the Psatha airspace.

Survivors from the helicopter that managed to land safely testified that they had no visual contact with the other aircraft and were operating in formation behind a lead helicopter. They stated they were unaware of a third helicopter participating in the operation. Upon impact, the crew initially believed they had struck power cables. Authorities are now analyzing radio communications and examining wreckage, which is being moved to the Tatoi Air Base for expert forensic analysis.
