PSD declares it will only support a government in which it participates

The Social Democratic Party (PSD), the largest faction in the Romanian Parliament, has announced it will only support the formation of a government in which it holds ministerial positions. Following a national political committee meeting in Sinaia, the party outlined two potential paths to resolve the country's four-month-long political crisis: the establishment of a minority PSD-led cabinet or the formation of a coalition government organized around the PSD.

PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu stated that the party aims to first agree on a government program with other parliamentary parties committed to the European Union and NATO. This program would focus on a ten-point priority list, including energy security, defense investments, industrial development, tax collection efficiency, rural development, education, and healthcare.

Grindeanu noted that while the PSD cannot currently request a mandate to form a government from the head of state due to lacking a parliamentary majority, it is prepared to propose its own prime ministerial candidate. The party also urged cross-party cooperation to prevent domestic political disputes from being exported to Brussels, which they argue could damage Romania's international reputation and jeopardize EU funding.
