PSMA PET/CT and MRI combination improves prostate cancer detection
A new study published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine indicates that combining MRI results with PSMA PET/CT-guided biopsies significantly improves the detection rate of clinically significant prostate cancer.
Research involving 63 men showed that when MRI findings were negative or inconclusive, systematic biopsies alone detected cancer in 21% of the population. In contrast, PET/CT-guided biopsies achieved a 37% detection rate. When both approaches were combined, the overall detection rate rose to 41%, nearly doubling the effectiveness of systematic sampling alone.
This advancement addresses a critical gap in current diagnostics, where up to 20–30% of clinically significant prostate cancers may be missed due to inconclusive MRI scans. The findings suggest that PSMA PET/CT can refine risk stratification and guide targeted sampling, potentially helping physicians identify difficult-to-detect tumors while avoiding unnecessary procedures.
