PSOE Accuses Coalition Canaria of Politicising Hantavirus Cruise Outbreak in Canary Islands

The regional PSOE leadership in the Canary Islands charged the nationalist Coalition Canaria (CC) with using political confrontation to conceal its own governance shortcomings. PSOE secretary of organization Nira Fierro criticised CC for repeatedly attacking the Spanish government and the regional executive instead of addressing real issues such as health, education and housing.

Fierro highlighted the recent hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship that sought to dock in the islands, noting that President Fernando Clavijo publicly refused to authorize the vessel’s berth, describing the move as “irresponsible negligence.” She defended the coordination undertaken between regional authorities and international bodies to manage the health crisis and called CC’s accusations against the state minister Ángel Víctor Torres “incomprehensible.”

The PSOE called on CC to assume responsibility for the pandemic‑related incident and to focus on substantive policy solutions rather than political attacks.
