PSOE launches second primary window amid Madrid leadership shifts

The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has launched its second window of primaries for regional and municipal federations, involving 164 different areas including La Rioja and several island councils.

In Madrid, internal tensions have surfaced following the recent primary elections for the municipal leadership. Reyes Maroto, the former Minister of Industry, secured the candidacy for the 2027 local elections with 1,045 votes, defeating Enma López, who received 841 votes. Following the contest, Maroto has removed López from her position as deputy spokesperson of the municipal group and from her role in coordinating district committees. López expressed that while she accepts the decision, she does not agree with it, stating it does not align with her understanding of internal party democracy.

Separately, the organization Anticapitalistas has announced 'Liberar Madrid', a political project aimed at contesting the 2027 regional and municipal elections. The initiative seeks to build a left-wing candidacy composed of independents and social activists to challenge the current leadership of the People's Party in Madrid.
