Psoriasis research identifies genetic mutation and drives early detection efforts

Medical advancements and awareness campaigns are addressing the complexities of psoriasis. In Argentina, medical entities have launched a national campaign to promote early detection of the chronic skin disease. This initiative aims to prevent complications such as psoriatic arthritis, which affects approximately 30% of those living with psoriasis. Gustavo Christian Casado, president of the Argentine Society of Rheumatology, noted that early diagnosis is crucial to prevent permanent joint damage and manage associated risks like obesity and cardiovascular issues.

In France, an international research team led by Professor Hervé Bachelez has identified a specific genetic cause for severe, treatment-resistant psoriasis. Published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, the study highlights a rare mutation in the ADAR1 gene. This mutation causes the immune system to overproduce inflammatory proteins, leading to chronic skin inflammation that does not respond to standard biotherapies. Researchers have already begun testing targeted treatments on patients carrying this mutation to provide relief for those previously resistant to medication.
