PSP agents face trial in Faro for kidnapping and homicide of Moroccan immigrant
The trial of two PSP agents from Olhão, Jorge Sousa and Pedro Barbosa, began at the Faro Court regarding the death of a Moroccan immigrant, Aissa Ait Aissa, in March 2024. The defendants are facing charges of two counts of aggravated kidnapping and one count of qualified homicide.
The prosecution alleges that the agents transported the victims in a patrol car away from Olhão and subjected Ait Aissa to violent assaults. Ait Aissa subsequently died in the intensive care unit of Faro Hospital 20 days after the incident.
During the proceedings, the agents denied all responsibility. They testified that they had been called to address disturbances at local supermarkets and decided to transport the men to Pechão to de-escalate the situation. They maintained that the men were handcuffed for safety but were peaceful and conscious when they were left at a location known as ‘caminho da sucata’. Additionally, GNR experts testified that blood patterns at the scene were inconsistent with a hit-and-run accident, supporting the theory of a deliberate incident.
