PSRM initiates revocation procedure for BNM Governor Anca Dragu

The Party of Socialists (PSRM) has initiated a procedure to revoke Anca Dragu from her position as Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM). Deputies Bogdan Țîrdea and Petru Burduja announced they are preparing a draft resolution to include this matter on the Parliament's agenda.

The move is driven by criticisms of the BNM's monetary policy and inflation forecasting. According to PSRM, the bank's initial 2026 inflation forecast of 5% was significantly inaccurate, as inflation reached approximately 7% by August, leading to a revised forecast of 7.2%. Additionally, the BNM increased its base rate from 5% to 9%, a move the socialists claim has caused credit rates for citizens and businesses to rise, with average interest rates on new loans in local currency reaching 9.2% in August.

Further criticisms include the bank's financial performance, with reports of net losses totaling 873 million lei and a 560 million lei decrease in foreign exchange reserves. The deputies also highlighted the high salary of the Governor, noting a declared income of approximately 2.8 million lei for 2025. To clarify the legal grounds for such a removal, deputies filed a request with the Constitutional Court on August 24 regarding the interpretation of the laws governing the revocation of the BNM Governor.
