PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk draw 1-1 in Champions League opener

PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk played to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the UEFA Champions League league phase at the Philips Stadion.

Shakhtar Donetsk took the lead in the final minute of the first half (45+1') through Venezuelan winger Gleiker Mendoza, who scored on his debut with a powerful shot from the left side of the area. Mendoza becomes only the fourth Venezuelan player to score in the main phase of the tournament.

PSV responded quickly after the break. In the 48th minute, American defender Sergiño Dest equalized with a low shot following an assist from Armando Obispo. Dest, who was named man of the match, also noted that while the draw was a step forward compared to previous opening matches, the team felt they could have achieved more.

Shakhtar Donetsk, managed by Arda Turan, secured a valuable away point as they continue to play away from home due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The result leaves both teams with one point as they begin the new Champions League format.
