Psychiatric terminology expands into everyday language

Psychological terminology is increasingly migrating from clinical settings into everyday conversation, a phenomenon described by researchers as 'concept creep.' Christian Rück, a psychiatrist and professor at Karolinska Institutet, notes that terms like 'trauma,' 'anxiety,' and 'narcissist' are frequently used to describe trivial life experiences or common stressors.

This expansion of language can lead to individuals self-diagnosing psychiatric conditions for non-clinical issues, such as routine worries about finances or work. Researchers define this 'therapy language' as an imprecise and superficial integration of psychotherapeutic terms into daily communication, which may blur the distinction between normal human suffering and medicalized mental illness.
