Fenerbahçe championship drought causes chronic stress in fans

Psychiatrist Dr. Akif Taşdemir has warned that Fenerbahçe's 12-year absence from the Süper Lig championship is causing chronic stress and psychological exhaustion among its supporters.

Dr. Taşdemir, practicing at Büyük Anadolu Hospital in Samsun, explains that the strong sense of belonging felt by fans can lead them to identify club failures with personal inadequacy. He describes a cycle of 'endless mourning,' where the hope generated by new transfers and coaching changes at the start of each season is repeatedly met with late-season disappointment.

This cycle can result in 'waiting fatigue,' characterized by constant anxiety, hyper-vigilance, and a sense of learned helplessness. The psychological impact often extends beyond the football pitch, potentially affecting fans' professional motivation, social interactions, and domestic relationships.
