Psychiatrist calls for self-care among intensive care doctors
During the “UCI El Momento Decisivo” symposium in La Romana, psychiatrist Alexandra Híchez addressed the emotional exhaustion and chronic stress faced by intensive care physicians. Híchez emphasized the need for medical professionals to prioritize self-care, stating that “saving lives should not mean losing one’s own.”
A survey conducted among 76 intensive care specialists and healthcare professionals using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey revealed that 28.9% of respondents feel exhausted at the end of their workday some times per month, while 13.2% experience this daily. Despite these challenges, over 70% of participants reported frequent satisfaction with their work and a sense of making a positive impact on patient lives.
