Psychiatrist explains distinction between autumn mood changes and depression

Psychiatry specialist Dr. Rıfat İnci from Medical Point Gaziantep Hospital has addressed the distinction between seasonal mood fluctuations and clinical depression during the autumn months.

Dr. İnci notes that changes in sunlight exposure, shorter days, and altered daily routines can lead to increased sleepiness, decreased energy, and social withdrawal. However, these symptoms alone do not constitute a diagnosis of depression. The critical factors for medical intervention are the duration, severity, and the extent to which these symptoms impair a person's ability to function in work, family, or social life.

Warning signs that require professional psychiatric support include persistent low mood, anhedonia (loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities), significant changes in appetite or sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and social isolation. To maintain mental well-being, experts recommend spending time outdoors, engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining consistent sleep schedules, eating a balanced diet, and sustaining social connections.
