Psychiatrist Kemal Sayar calls for digital fasting

Psychiatrist and author Prof. Dr. Kemal Sayar has advocated for the practice of “digital fasting” to preserve authentic human connections. Speaking at the Samsun Book Fair organized by the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, Sayar addressed the psychological impacts of modern life during his talk titled “The Courage to Stop: Serenity in the Age of Speed.”

Sayar suggested that the modern compulsion to constantly produce and succeed is often a way to avoid deep thought. He noted that people accelerate their lives to escape painful memories and the contemplation of death, stating that “stopping is also thinking.”

Regarding the influence of social media, Sayar warned that excessive digital engagement can lead to the loss of reality and genuine relationships. He emphasized the importance of face-to-face, organic interactions, noting that being understood is a fundamental human need. He further advised young people to nourish their souls through nature, sports, and the arts rather than filling their minds with trivial digital content.
