Psychological development of the capacity to love
Psychological perspectives suggest that the ability to love is not an innate or automatic trait, but a skill developed through human growth and early life experiences. Unlike biological developments that occur during puberty, the capacity for love is rooted in early childhood, specifically starting with the bond between a mother and her infant.
If a strong foundation is established during childhood and youth, the ability to love can be further developed. However, without consistent practice or the right environment, this capacity can diminish over time. While Sigmund Freud identified ‘loving and working’ as the criteria for mental health, the specific developmental processes of how love is shaped remain a complex area of psychological study.
