Psychological diagnoses and social media trends

The increasing popularity of psychological diagnoses on social media has led to a trend where individuals seek labels for common behaviors. While a formal diagnosis can provide relief and explanation for long-term struggles, there is a growing tendency to use terms like ADHD, autism, or narcissism to explain isolated incidents or personality traits.

Social media algorithms often prioritize engaging content, such as videos listing ‘signs’ of a disorder, over clinical diagnostic criteria. This can lead users to perceive these conditions in themselves or others based on superficial symptoms, potentially blurring the line between a clinical diagnosis—which requires a pattern of intense, long-term impact—and everyday human experiences.
