Psychological factors behind feeling happiness for others' success

Psychological research explores why individuals can feel genuine gratitude and happiness when witnessing the success of others. This ability is linked to emotional maturity, empathy, and psychological well-being.

Key characteristics of individuals who can celebrate others' achievements include the ability to empathize with the struggles and sacrifices others have endured, and the capacity to view someone else's success as a non-threat to their own progress. Rather than viewing another person's promotion or milestone as a sign of personal inadequacy, these individuals maintain a healthy social comparison framework.

A 2022 study titled “How Individuals React Emotionally to Others' (Mis)fortunes: A Social Comparison Framework” by Lea Boecker, David D. Loschelder, and Sascha Topolinski examined the relationships between social comparison, envy, sympathy, and happiness regarding the successes of others.
