Psychological foundations of intimacy and healthy relationships

Insights into the foundations of healthy relationships emphasize the importance of emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and physical components. According to psychiatrist Vladeta Jerotić, a successful marriage does not require perfection in all four areas simultaneously, but partners must recognize which areas need more attention when they begin to weaken.

Jerotić specifically cautioned against neglecting physical intimacy, particularly during middle age, as a decline in this area can be a precursor to infidelity. He noted that while emotional and intellectual compatibility may be easier to manage, the differing rhythms of desire between men and women often present unique challenges as partners age.

True intimacy is characterized by safety, reciprocity, and respect rather than control. Healthy connections are built on communication and the freedom to be oneself, rather than monitoring a partner's privacy, such as their phone or location. Emotional security is maintained when conflict does not devolve into humiliation or silence.
