Psychological impact of chronic violence on the human mind

Research and psychological studies indicate that chronic exposure to violence fundamentally reshapes the human mind. According to researcher Megan Kang, writing for Aeon, constant danger causes individuals to misinterpret social cues, anticipate threats, and view violent responses as a necessary part of their identity.

In high-violence areas, such as certain neighborhoods in Chicago, the psychological framework created by external danger can lead to a cycle of retaliation. However, cognitive behavioral intervention programs suggest these patterns are not permanent. By training individuals to reframe situations, expand their perceived response options, and separate their actions from their core identity, it is possible to reduce the cycle of violence.
