Psychological impacts of deadlines, stress, and burnout

Psychological perspectives suggest that deadlines can serve as tools for progress by converting abstract intentions into concrete actions. While deadlines can cause anxiety or stress, realistic time limits can increase focus and prevent procrastination by creating clear start and end points for tasks.

However, it is essential to distinguish between routine work stress and burnout. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), burnout is a phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by feelings of energy depletion, increased mental distance or negativity toward one's job, and reduced professional effectiveness.

In contrast, regular stress is often a response to specific, temporary challenges such as presentations or heavy workloads. While stress can cause irritability or sleep disturbances, individuals typically feel relief once the specific task is completed. If left unmanaged, however, recurring stress can lead to more severe mental health issues.
