Psychological insights on emotional validation and resilience

Psychological experts offer insights into emotional support and resilience. Clinical psychologist Dr. Jaime Zuckerman suggests that the three-word phrase “That makes sense” can be a powerful tool for validating others. By using this phrase, a person confirms the experiences, feelings, and opinions of another without necessarily agreeing with everything said. This validation can create a safe, non-judgmental space that reduces defensive reactions and helps the listener feel understood.

In a different approach to psychological resilience, the teachings of Viktor Frankl, an Austrian psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, emphasize finding meaning in suffering. Frankl’s work in logotherapy suggests that while individuals cannot always control external circumstances, they retain the freedom to choose their attitude toward those circumstances. He posits that when a situation cannot be changed, the focus should shift to what can be changed within oneself and how to respond to the present moment.
